Our semi-formal curriculum is developed to meet the varying needs of some of our most complex learners. It builds on the principles of the Pre-formal curriculum progressing the interplay between sensory processing and engagement in core development.

Our Semi-formal curriculum has been developed and adapted from Dr Penny Lacey’s work. This focuses on Functional Communication, Cognition & Application, Physical Development & Co-ordination, Creativity and Personal Social and Health Education – with Independence skills running through all these areas.

The Semi-formal Curriculum is non-subject specific, work is broken down to individual and group activities within themes and topics. Lessons focus on repetition of particular skills to enable the child to generalise, retain and apply their acquired skills across a range of settings. The work that the pupils do is visually recorded, via the online evidencing tool Earwig, and annotated in relation to their targets. The achievements and progress of children are assessed via engagement steps, on an assessment tool provided by B Squared.
